All-American Classic: Of Mice & Men (J. Steinbeck)

"I seen hunderds of men come by on the road an' on the ranches, with their bindles on their back an' that same damn thing in their heads. Hundreds of them. They come, an' they quit an' go on; an' every damn one of 'em's got a little piece of land in his head. An' never a God damn one of 'em ever gets it. Just like heaven. Everybody wants a little piece of lan'. I read plenty of books out here. Nobody never gets to heaven, and nobody gets no land. It's just in their head. They're all the time talkin' about it, but it's jus' in their head."

oscurecía y no podía ver

Wall Street Journal (USA):

The Sun (UK):

Arriba.

Terror Strikes Norway

We don’t know if al Qaeda was directly responsible for today’s events, but in all likelihood the attack was launched by part of the jihadist hydra. Prominent jihadists have already claimed online that the attack is payback for Norway’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan.

Al Qaeda and affiliated jihadist groups do not give up on targets easily. From the World Trade Center to U.S. warships, the terrorists have repeatedly sought to avenge failed attacks. The bombings in Oslo today might very well be another example of this obstinacy.

The Washington Post: Right turn (Jennifer Rubin)

Moreover, there is a specific jihadist connection here: “Just nine days ago, Norwegian authorities filed charges against Mullah Krekar, an infamous al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist who, with help from Osama bin Laden, founded Ansar al Islam – a branch of al Qaeda in northern Iraq – in late 2001.”

This is a sobering reminder for those who think it’s too expensive to wage a war against jihadists. I spoke to Gary Schmitt of the American Enterprise Institute, who has been critical of proposed cuts in defense and of President Obama’s Afghanistan withdrawal plan. “There has been a lot of talk over the past few months on how we’ve got al-Qaeda on the run and, compared with what it once was, it’s become a rump organization. But as the attack in Oslo reminds us, there are plenty of al-Qaeda allies still operating. No doubt cutting the head off a snake is important; the problem is, we’re dealing with global nest of snakes.”

Media Rushed To Suggest Radical Muslims Might Have Been To Blame For Norway Terrorism

Before there was any evidence of who was responsible for the terrorist bombing and shooting in Norway, mainstream media outlets rushed to finger Muslims and Muslim groups as potential perpetrators and listed grievances that radical Muslims had against the country. Norwegian officials have since said that a non-Muslim was responsible for the terrorist acts.

Right-Wing Media Figures Instantly Pinned Blame For Norway Attacks On Muslims

Right-Wing Media Immediately Blamed Muslims For Norway Attacks. With no evidence, the conservative media blamed the attacks on radical Islam. Those who participated in the rush to judgment included Jennifer Rubin of the Washington Post, CNN contributor Erick Erickson, and Andrew Breitbart's BigPeace.com. The Breitbart website surmised that the attacks could have meant that Norway's "big Muslim problem" had "just blown up in its face." Erickson wrote via Twitter: "Terrorist bombing in Oslo. I bet you it was not Lutherans who did it." Pamela Geller posted a headline on her blog asking if there was "Jihad in Norway." [Media Matters 7/24/11, Atlas Shrugs, 7/22/11]

But Mainstream Media Also Rushed To Suggest That Norway Terrorist Was Muslim

CNN's Cruickshank Reported That "Norway Has Been In Al Qaeda's Crosshairs," Ignoring Other Explanations For Attack. From the July 22 edition of CNN Newsroom:

BALDWIN: Our terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank is standing. He joins me from London. And, Paul, I just want to hit you right up with this. Why Norway? Why would terrorists target the Scandinavian country?

PAUL CRUICKSHANK, CNN TERRORISM ANALYST: Well, actually, Norway has been in al Qaeda's crosshairs for quite some time.

In 2003, Ayman al-Zawahiri, the now leader of al Qaeda, issued a threat against Norway, singled Norway out. Norway is in Afghanistan, it's part of NATO. But also last year a newspaper in Norway published controversial images of the Prophet Mohammed, republished those images which had been originally published in a Danish newspaper some years back. So many reasons why a group like al Qaeda or another jihadist group may want to come after a country like Norway, Brooke.

[...]

CRUICKSHANK: I think we're talking about a relatively high level of sophistication here. The carnage recalls the scenes in 1998 of the U.S. African embassies that were targeted by al Qaeda. This was a huge bomb that was exploded today. It seems to have killed, unfortunately, a significant amount of people.

Also, coordinated attacks it seems today where they may have been trying to take out some of the political leadership of Norway as well. So it bears all the hallmarks of the al Qaeda terrorist organization at the moment. But we don't know at this point who was responsible, Brooke.

BALDWIN: You know, after Osama bin Laden's death, there were Islamic extremists who came forward and said there will be retaliation, there will be revenge, we will be coming back. Might this be a manifestation of that threat?

CRUICKSHANK: It's possibly that this is in some way related to that. And in Norway, in recent months, there's been increased terrorist threat activity chatter that Norwegian counterterrorism services have been monitoring. [CNN, CNN Newsroom, 7/22/11]
CNN's Elbagir: "Many Of Those On The Extremist Fringes" Believe Attack Was Revenge For Bin Laden's Death. From the July 22 edition of CNN Newsroom:

KAYE: And any claims yet of responsibility in terms of the bombing?

ELBAGIR: We haven't had any serious claims, but what we are seeing on a lot of the pro-jihad forums is a lot of celebration, a lot of jubilation. They said that the mujahedeen, the Islamic extremists promised revenge after Osama bin Laden's death and many of those on the extremist fringes of the Islamic movement believe that this now that revenge. In fact, one just posted that Europe, there is more coming. Many in the intelligence community that I've been speaking to say that their concern is that if it is an Islamic extremist group that has carried out the attack -- that this was done because they believe that Norway was a soft target. You've had several al Qaeda franchises, like al Qaeda in Yemen attempting to hit out Europe and the United States. And they believe that they might have tried to hit Norway because they did not think that their security was really as strong as it could have been. [CNN, CNN Newsroom, 7/22/11]

Edward Said On 'Orientalism'

Oslo Bombing & Youth Labour Party Mass Massacre - Why Was Norway Targeted?

Y a quien soledad persigue
y por las noches yo lo intento
de tu castigo soy el dueño
porque tu odio es lo que encuentro

Soy el ladrón de tu amor
y estoy confeso

Siempre a mi lado.
Nunca me juró su amor
lo creía eterno yo.
Y ella me sonreía y

The Edge of the World [excerpt]

by Adunis

I release the earth and I imprison the skies. I fall down in order to stay faithful to
the light, in order to make the world ambiguous, fascinating, changeable, dangerous, in
order to announce the steps beyond.

The blood of the gods is still fresh on my clothes. A seagull's scream echoes
through my pages. Let me just pack up my words and leave.

The Earth

How often you have said to me
"I have another country,"
your palms filling with tears
and your eyes
filling with lightning
from where the borders keep edging closer.

Did your eyes know that the earth,
whenever it cried or cheered your footsteps,
here where you have sung, or there,
that it knows every passerby but you
and knows itself to be one,
dried up breasts, dry inside,
and that it doesn't know the ritual of rejection?

Did your eyes realize
that you yourself are the earth?

Biografía

Adonis was born Ali Ahmed Said in the village of Al Qassabin in Syria, in 1930, to a family of farmers, the oldest of six children. At the age of nineteen, he adopted the name Adonis (also spelled Adunis), after the Greek god of fertility, with the hopes that the new name would result in newspaper publication of his poems.

Although his family could not afford to send Adonis to school, his father taught him to read poetry and the Qu'ran, and memorize poems while he worked in the fields. When he was fourteen, Adonis read a poem to the president of Syria who was visiting a nearby town. The impressed president offered to grant a request, to which the young Adonis responded that he wanted to attend school. The president quickly made arrangements for Adonis to attend a French-run high school, after which he studied philosophy at Damascus University.

In 1956, after a year-long imprisonment for political activities, Adonis fled Syria for Beirut, Lebanon. He joined a vibrant community of artists, writers, and exiles in Beirut, and co-founded and edited Sh'ir, and later Muwaqaf, both progressive journals of poetry and politics. He studied at St. Joseph University in Beirut and obtained his Doctorat d'Etat in 1973.

Considered one of the Arab world's greatest living poets, Adonis is the author of numerous collections, including Mihyar of Damascus (BOA Editions, 2008), A Time Between Ashes and Roses (Syracuse University Press, 2004); If Only the Sea Could Sleep (2003); The Pages of Day and Night (2001); Transformations of the Lover (1982); The Book of the Five Poems (1980); The Blood of Adonis (1971), winner of the Syria-Lebanon Award of the International Poetry Forum; Songs of Mihyar the Damascene (1961), Leaves in the Wind (1958), and First Poems (1957). He is also an essayist, an editor of anthologies, a theoretician of poetics, and the translator of several works from French into Arabic.

Over the course of his career, Adonis has fearlessly experimented with form and content, pioneering the prose poem in Arabic, and taking a influential, and sometimes controversial role in Arab modernism. In a 2002 interview in the New York Times, Adonis declared: '"There is no more culture in the Arab world. It's finished. Culturally speaking, we are a part of Western culture, but only as consumers, not as creators."

Adonis's awards and honors include the first ever International Nâzim Hikmet Poetry Award, the Syria-Lebanon Best Poet Award, and the Highest Award of the International Poem Biennial in Brussels. He was elected as Stephen Mallarme Academy Member in Paris in 1983. He has taught at the Lebanese University as a professor of Arabic literature, at Damascus University, and at the Sorbonne. He has been a Lebanese citizen since 1961 and currently lives in Paris.

Poetas del mundo: Sarah Kay

Sarah Kay: Poet

A performing poet since she was 14 years old, Sarah Kay is the founder of Project V.O.I.C.E, teaching poetry and self-expression at schools across the United States.

Why you should listen to her:

hands are not about politics / this is a poem about love / and fingers/ fingers interlock like a beautiful zipper of prayer
Sarah Kay

Plenty of 14-year-old girls write poetry. But few hide under the bar of the famous Bowery Poetry Club in Manhattan’s East Village absorbing the talents of New York’s most exciting poets. Sarah Kay also had the guts to take its stage and hold her own against performers at least a decade her senior. Her talent for weaving words into poignant, funny, and powerful performances paid off.

Now 22, Kay is a successful spoken word poet and codirects Project V.O.I.C.E. (Vocal Outreach Into Creative Expression). Founded by Kay in 2004, Project V.O.I.C.E. encourages people, particularly teenagers, to use spoken word as a tool for understanding the world and self, and a medium for vital expression.
"A day with Sarah Kay reminded me of poetry's power to help us make sense of our lives, to see the world in a new way."

Otro serio, amenazante ,y otro tranquilo y errante.

Otro poeta periodista, otro actor y oficinista,

Dido, Thank you:

Príncipes

Vio ponerse el sol en la bañera
y aprendió...

a beber como los gatos,

de la nieve que ha crecido
y sigue creciendo,

Debo sospechar
de lo que quiero.
